What are the boundaries of identity and is it fair for others to decide who and what you are? These questions and the specter of racism and homophobia animate a sequence of events in a small community in upstate New York when an openly gay high school teacher is accused of promoting racist ideas in his classroom.
A. B. ASHER is a native of the Bronx, NY. His full length play, Gibeah, will be presented by Showcase Theatre as the second offering this season on November 25th. Asher, an avid theater lover, turned to playwriting in order to bring to life some of the people he has known. Including Gibeah he has completed a cycle of full-length plays, Competing Narratives, Pedestrian Crossing, Broken Soul, and Revelation. He has also completed shorter pieces including two one-acts, Animum Reflectere and Hermanos, and four ten-minute pieces, Candid Date, P.O.C., Play Ground, and Flight.
Broken Soul, a 2006 Pilgrim Project Play Development Grant recipient, has had a reading at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in Manhattan. Competing Narratives was read in Los Angeles as part of the Celebrating New Works Reading Series at the Celebration Theatre. Flight is scheduled to be shown at the Community Circles Month play festival in the San Francisco East Bay Area and Animum Reflectere was presented in Manhattan Repertory Theater’s SummerFest 2006. Candid Date was a participating play in the August 2006 Strawberry One-Act Festival and Hermanos was shown as part of the 9th Annual Carrollwood Players One-Act Weekend in Tampa, FL.
A.B. Asher has taken part in playwriting classes at The New School and in a private workshop as well as playwrighting workshops at Primary Stages in Manhattan. He is currently working with other writers in an independent writers’ group.
