The play is set in a small New Jersey city whose mayor is enamored of Broadway tunes, and never met a crisis that couldn’t be addressed with some well-chosen lyrics. His love of Stephen Sondheim and other songwriters is put to a test as he attempts to lead the troubled city through a plethora of crisises while running for re-election.

JOHN DOBLE is the playwright of The Mayor Who Would be Sondheim, Showcase Theatre’s fourth offering of the season on April 8, 2006. This play was a finalist in The Playwrights’ Center’s 2005 PlayLabs Festival, in Minneapolis, and in the Theatre Resources Unlimited Reading Series 2005 in NYC. It was also one of three finalists at the Stage 3 Theatre Company’s Eighth Annual Festival of new Plays in Sonora, CA, in October 2004, and nominated by playwright/director Jaye Austin Williams for a Cherry Lane Theatre Mentorship, 2004. The play had readings with Equity actors at Pulse Ensemble Theatre (NYC, 2003) and the Ensemble Studio Theatre Institute (NYC, 2002). John’s play, Blind Date, was selected for the 2005 Last Frontier Theatre Festival, in Valdez, Alaska, and performed in the 2004 Samuel French Off-Off-Broadway Original Short-Play Festival. Another of his plays, Mortgage, was performed in the Pulse Ensemble Theatre Fun Festival of one-act comedies, July 2004. A collection of his short fiction, Lefty and Other Stories (Clemson University Press, 2003), was nominated for the 2004 Pushcart Prize and The Story Prize.
